Human motivation proceeds from intrinsic need to reach our potential In 1943, Abraham Maslow penned his paper on human motivation theorizing that behavior generally proceeds out of a progression of needs: a need for food; a need for safety; a need for social interaction, to be loved, to be esteemed; eventually culminating in a need to reach one’s potential (self-actualization); and, the desire to give back (self-transcendence).
Maslow postulates that humans have an inherent drive towards self-actualization, the process of realizing and expressing one's own full capabilities and creativity.
However, to pursue higher order motivations, lower order needs must be repetitively met: . Truth #5 – Maslow’s Theory, Understanding Our Needs! . ©2018 iiSM.ORG, All Rights Reserved. Lower Order Needs – basic needs and psychological needs must be met as prerequisites to enabling us, our staff and our customers to pursue higher order motivations.
Safety Needs – Our communities, customers, and staffs all prosper and bloom, doing their best work and/or play, when our management practices, products and services enable progression of motivation without violating lower order needs such as safety and esteem!
Need For Progression – We have a physiological drive to progress, to reach our full potential. This need motivates us to seek-out contexts in which we can be fulfilled!
Do our management practices, products, and services enable higher order motivations?
